Hotel Shikarbadi, Udaipur

This is an excellent four star option at this price. It used to be the hunting lodge of the Maharaja, hence the name. Our alternate choice was a trip to Kumbhalgarh. I am glad we chose to stay back in Udaipur. We paid $85 for a two night stay inclusive of $30 of food vouchers.
This hotel is located about 15 minutes drive away from the city and is absolutely secluded. It is surrounded by hills on all sides and is extremely quiet. It has lovely gardens, a swimming pool, stud farm, a private airstrip, a deer park and a very nice bar. It's restaurant is highly recommended for Indian cuisine. While we were there the entire hotel had no other guests and we were pampered by a staff of 96! It has a Raj type of atmosphere which I enjoyed more than the Lake Palace. Now that is high praise indeed!

Rooms are nice but not luxurious. Avoid the 'chalet' rooms. These are newer and lack any kind of atmosphere. The library has a good collection of books on horses.

The horses themselves are much better than I have come across anywhere else in India. All in all an extremely relaxing place.

Rajasthan - The Desert State of India by Magdalena
The greatest attraction for me about Rajasthan is the incredible architecture. Every city had several forts, temples and mosques which were nothing like I'd ever seen before. The problem is that after a while even the most beautiful fort or palace is yet another fort or palace. They begin to blend into one another.
