Wildlife Safaris
The best time to visit the park is between October and April, and the park is actually closed during the monsoon from 1 June to 1 October. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to view wildlife. There's a reasonable chance of spotting a tiger, but you should plan on two or three safaris. Other game, especially the larger and smaller herbivores, are more numerous. Even if you don't see a tiger, it's worth the effort for the scenery alone in India it's not often you get the chance to visit such a large area of virgin bush. A good network of four gravel track crisscrosses the park and on each safari two or three jeeps take each trail. There are also large trucks (open-topped) called canters, which seat 22 people, but they're limited to only two of the trails. Safaris are undertaken in open-sided jeeps driven by a ranger.

Ranthambhore Fort
The ancient Ranthambhore Fort, in the heart of the national park, is believed to have been built by the Chauhan Rajputs in the 10th century AD, only a few years before the invasion of India by Mohammed Ghori. According to tradition, the fort was erected over the site at which two princes were engaged in a boar hunt. The boar eluded the princes and dived into a lake. Not to be thwarted, the princes prayed to Shiva to restore the boar. This Shiva deigned to do, on condition that the princes build a fort in his honor at the spot. However, it is Ganesh who is most revered at the fort, and a temple in his honor can be found overlooking its southern ramparts.
